Orthobiologics are substances used for treating acute injuries and chronic conditions affecting muscles, bones, joints, and soft tissues (ligaments, tendons, and cartilage). It uses cells from your own body or a donor to improve recovery after an injury or minimize damage from degenerative conditions, such as osteoarthritis.
The most common cell and tissue types used in regenerative medicine are:
- Adipose (fat) tissue
- Bone marrow
- Blood plasma
Orthobiologic therapy uses platelets or cells from your body to help with healing after an injury. If the doctor cannot get these cells from your blood, bone marrow, or tissues, they can use stem cells or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) from another person (a donor) instead.
Doctors inject these cells directly into the joint, ligament, tendon, or cartilage where you are experiencing pain or injury. Once injected, the cells reduce inflammation, which helps minimize pain, promote healing, and improve joint function.
Orthobiologics may be an option for people who cannot have surgery or have injuries that surgery cannot repair. It can be performed as a standalone treatment or as part of a treatment plan that includes surgery, physical therapy, or both.
At Bio Ortho Care, our doctors are experts in providing safe and effective regenerative medicine treatments. We have been using these treatments for musculoskeletal injuries for more than 10 years. Our doctors and surgeons also participate in leading-edge research to expand the use of orthobiologics to improve healing and outcomes after injury.
Our team of orthopaedic surgeons, sports medicine doctors, and advanced practice providers can help you understand all your options, from the least invasive treatments and therapies to surgery when appropriate.
If you are coming to our clinic for a second opinion on an orthopaedic injury, we recommend bringing your current assessment, medical notes, and any previous imaging to your appointment. Request a second opinion appointment in our clinic.
